Introduction to calculate potential energy:
Ever heard the term, "He has huge potential for development"? If you have heard of it then you probably know what it means. It means that whoever it is that is being referred to here, they have a huge capacity for development. The Potential part of Potential Energy has the same usage too.
The Potential Energy of a body refers to the Energy Capacity of a body, usually at rest. Depending upon the mass of the body we have a time tested formula for calculating the Potential Energy of a body. As a little byline, this term was coined by the physicist William Rankine.
Formula for Potential Energy
Suppose a body of mass M is at a height (or was lifted to that height) H and if the acceleration due to gravity in the area is G, then the potential energy P.E. of the body is given as
P.E. = M*G*H
Note: Unless specified differently in a numerical problem, G is always taken as 9.8m/s2
Units of Potential Energy:
The Unit of Potential Energy is same as that of Energy. In the S.I. unit system it is Joules and Newton-meter
Forms of potential energy:
There are many different forms of Potential Energy and each has its own formula for calculation, which we shall not discuss here. Some of these forms are:
Gravitational Potential Energy
Elastic Potential Energy
Electrodynamic Potential Energy
Electrostatic Potential Energy
Nuclear Potential Energy
All these forms have their individual uses, units and formulas.

Potential Energy VS Kinetic Energy
Potential Energy is often confused with Kinetic Energy. There is a very elementary difference between these two expressions.
The Potential Energy refers to the energy possessed by a body at rest while Kinetic Energy refers to the energy possessed by a body in motion (i.e. the velocity of the body is taken into consideration).

Two Forms of Energy
Introduction to Energy:
Energy is a capacity to do some work. Energy can exist in various forms which are mutually convertible. Since the energy is measured in terms of work therefore its units are same as that of work.
There are mainly three types of energy:
Kinetic energy and
Potential energy
Kinetic form of energy
Kinetic energy:
The work done by a body by virtue of its motion is called its kinetic energy.
It is measures by the work it can do against an opposing force before it is brought to rest.
Kinetic energy = work done against the force
= force x displacement
=F x s
Therefore, kinetic energy= (1/2) x mass x square of the velocity

Potential form of energy
Potential energy: It is the energy possessed by a body due to its position with respect to another body.
The potential energy of a body with respect to the earth is measured by amount of work in the earth is measures by amount of work in lifting it through a certain vertical height.
A body of mass m is to be raised through a height h. The force with which the body is attracted by the earth is its weight mg to lift the body an equal and opposite force has to be applied.
Potential energy = work done to lift the body
= force x displacement
Potential energy = mg h.
Principle of conservation of energy
The total amount of energy in the universe always remains a constant, that is neither any more energy can be created nor any part of the energy can be destroyed, but energy can be changed from one form into another form
Examples
When a body is projected vertically upwards its velocity goes on decreasing till the velocity is reduced to zero
When the bob of a simple pendulum is displaced from its equilibrium position and then it is release, then its initial PE changes into KE in the vertical position.
