Before discussing about the law of motion let is try to answer a simple question. Imagine walking on the road and you accidentally hit a stone. What do you think happens then? Yes one thing is obvious you can hurt your leg. But let us apply some physics to this and try to find the answer to why this actually happened. When we hit the stone we exerted some force to it. The direction of this force was in line towards the stone.
So some action took place. The next part is interesting. The stone hit us back and this time the line of force was towards our foot. This is when reaction occurred.

By now it is clear that the two forces were opposite to each other and were in synchronization with the line of action. Also for an action there was an equal and opposite reaction.
So this is where Newton's third Law of Motion comes into picture. It states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. For every force acting during action an equal and opposite force will act during the reaction. It is important to remember that the forces will be opposite to each other.
Newtons third Law can be mathematically stated as:
F action = - F reaction - - - - - - - - > (1)
Here the minus sign signifies that the forces are opposite to each other. F action is the force of action while F reaction is the force of reaction.
What is Newton’s third law of motion can now be answered very easily. We can take a few example to reinforce our concept.

We are able to walk because we push the ground and an equal and opposite reactive force makes us walk on the floor. Think of why the wear and tear of tires of vehicles is caused. It is due to the frictional force applied. Similarly let us take an example of a truck and a car colliding with each other.
There will be severe damage to both. This is because both of them have applied forces on each other while they collide. When the ball hits the hands of the catcher then he hurts his hand.
This is because the ball pushes the hand and the hand pushes the ball in turn. It is for the same reason that the catcher in cricket puts his hands down in order to reduce the pressure of ball hitting his hands.
